Are Granules in Your Gutters a Sign Your Roof Is Failing?

Asphalt shingles are covered with small granules that help protect the material underneath from sun and weather.

Over time, some granule loss is normal. You may notice granules in gutters or near downspouts, especially on a newer roof or as shingles age.

What matters is the bigger picture. Significant or uneven granule loss, exposed areas on the shingles, or other signs of wear may be worth a closer look.

What granule loss can look like and why it ends up in your gutters

Granule loss happens when the small protective granules on asphalt shingles begin to wear away, exposing more of the shingle surface underneath.

Granule loss found during a recent roof inspection in Nampa, Idaho. This is one of the signs we look at when evaluating the overall condition of a roof.

Granules alone do not tell the whole story, so finding them in a gutter does not automatically mean your roof is failing.

If you are unsure, an inspection can help put what you are seeing into context and show you whether the roof is still performing as it should.
